International, domestic, closed, open, interracial are not words many people would hear and naturally think about adoption. According to the website, American Adoptions, adoption is becoming more and more popular over the past 30 years (Americanadoption.com). Adoption has become so big that celebrities are even getting involved and adopting children from all over the world. As you can see from the photo, adoption is becoming ever so popular, but that is not what makes it special. Adoption is more about helping people to create a bond of love found in families. It is not just the adopting couple that is gaining a new understanding of love, it is also the child or children that are being adopted will gain also. While there is love being shown all over, there are still 114,000 kids in foster care waiting to be adopted (nationaladoptionday.com). Through this collage of pictures, I hope to show that love is as present in adoption just as it is in a normal birth.
When I was thinking of ways to create a visual argument I was thinking of different things that were important in making it a successful visual aid. I thought about audience and types of things that were important to grab the attention and feelings of the audience.
My audience is very broad. This visual argument will really grab the attention of females around the age of motherhood. Females have to go through the process of carrying a baby for nine months then the pains of giving birth. This can be very hard on a woman when she knows she can’t experience this feeling on her own due to medical problems. My wife and I dealt with this due to my past experiences with cancer. Adoption is at times hard to look at for women due to these feelings of wanting to carry their own baby. With all this knowledge, I thought this would be my best audience to look towards. I knew with this audience I can look towards their emotions.
Pathos, persuasion by using the audience’s emotions, comes into play with this visual aid and my perspective audience. Fem ales and babies are destined to bring emotions involved. As mentioned earlier, it can be hard on females to admit they have to use the route of adoption. I used pictures of families and babies to bring out happy emotions from the audience. By going towards happy emotions, this will help the visual argument to become more effective. This will cause the audience to think about the pictures and really ponder. Also, the word selection also plays a roll in pathos. It talks about how love is deeper then blood. These words make the audience understand that love can be felt for children you personally don’t create. I know that this is emotional of females because I have been there.
This leads to Ethos and Logos. I have placed the middle picture in that spot because that is my wife and I with our baby girl Abby. We are finishing up our adoption right now so this helps me establish Ethos. I know what the audience is feeling and can sympathize with the audience. My personal experiences help establish credibility with the audience. Logos is also somewhat shown by the shirt with the girl in the top corner. It talks about how adoption is becoming more popular and stats can back up that argument. These two arguments were harder to have because of the nature behind them. Ethos and Logos are much easier to use with speech or written arguments. I think that it is hard to show stats or prove knowledge in a topic with photos as I have chose to do with this assignment.
When I first started with this assignment I was a little confused and worried I would never be able to figure it out. After time I was helped down the path by my sister and things started to flow together. I think this assignment was easy yet hard at the same time. I really liked trying to find ways to get ethos, pathos, and logos into a picture collage. I think this made you think in what order to put the pictures and which pictures to put into it. This really made you think about what pictures would really be the most effective. Also coming up with a punch line was tough. This line would really have to be effective. We only had a few words to deliver a powerful punch. These were the only words that would really be seen by the audience and they had to be powerful. If I did it again I would try to add maybe a video to add more to the project. I think there are many ways to go after this project and all would be able to accomplish its purpose, but everyone is different. The delivery method is not what is important, the message is. Adoption can be a powerful topic and this collage was created to help deliver the blessing it can be in our lives.

The visual image should contain a clear and specific statement of claim. The written text should address the process of composing the visual argument. To what degree do they
· Use clear and effective visual representation of support to claim? Explain.
Since his claim is about the ability to form such a deep love with someone who is not a blood relative, his visual representation was spot-on. The pictures all demonstrate family love and/or adoption making a family genuinely happy.
· Use design principles effectively? Explain.
His pictures had enough space and overlap so each picture was easily viewable and separated, but still close and artsy. His placement of the “Love is thicker than blood” sentence is easily visible, but I believe it could be a little bit bigger.
· Make effective incorporation of ethos, pathos, and logos in the visual representation of the argument? Please explain.
Ethos was incorporated very well. Including a picture of his own adoption experience as the center image gives solid credibility. Logos was shown through the woman’s shirt in the top right corner, and it displays his logical claim of adoption gaining popularity. Pathos was incorporated through every picture used, and they all show it off well.
· Who is this visual image/argument geared toward? Who is the target audience?
The target audience is women who want to be mothers, but they cannot for some reason. His visuals do a great job capturing this audience.
· How well does the written text provide thorough, clear, and thoughtful answers to questions in the essay? Explain.
He did a really good job explaining his reasoning behind the pictures used and their placement. He shared his thought process in detail and it answered all of my questions regarding the photo collage.
